People in Kamloops want to a performing arts centre built more than any other recreation facilities.
That’s according to a recreation master plan more than two years in the making, which included input from nearly a thousand Kamloops residents.
“There’s desires to do new things. Things like pickleball and public skating came out. There were some conversations for the need for more water as far as swimming pools go. And a performing arts centre was the number-one deficiency at this point,” Director of Community and Protective Services Byron McCorkell says, while speaking on the NL Morning News.
Pool facilities are second on the wish list behind a performing arts centre, McCorkell says.
“We did a study way back in 2003 talking about our aquatic needs as the community grows. And I think where we’re deficient really is in recreation waters, stuff that is for unprogrammed play.”
The master plan also calls for two new arenas with three new sheets of ice in the next 12 years.
“If we were to go into a concerted effort to build something we would go through a planning process. But the way recreation goes these days and the cost of these facilities, generally speaking, you’re looking to put infrastructure together. So we have some opportunities with the sports centre on Mac Island, we have some opportunities maybe with other existing rinks.”
The plan also calls for more support for seniors centres, and says transportation is a barrier for seniors to get to those facilities.
City council will be asked to adopt the recreation master plan tomorrow afternoon.
