As the dispute between Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and the Federal and Provincial governments moves into week number four, the two sides are finally talking but one politician wonders if it will do any good.
Ellis Ross is the Liberal MLA for the riding of Skeena in Northern BC.
He counts himself as one of the many First Nations people that are in favour of the project.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, the opposition critic for LNG and Resource Opportunities, was asked if he had anything to say to the protesters. “Nothing really, but the organizers. It’s not the protesters, they’re being fed a line so you can’t really blame the protesters. They’re being told one percent of the story.”
While he doesn’t blame the protesters, the opposition critic for LNG and Resource Opportunities had strong words for protest organizers. ” It’s pretty despicable that you’re using First Nations for your agenda, number one and number two, you’re actually convincing Canadians to shut down Canada. Why do you want to do that? Why? We’ve got a great standard of living here, this a good country.”
“Why don’t you take your protest to China, the biggest polluter in the world? Or India? Or Russia? Or the European Union? Or the United States?
“Shut down one of the many coal plants that China is actually building right now. But no, what you do is go after one the politest countries in the world, Canada, because you know we won’t fight back. Well, I’m fighting back because I think it’s worth fighting for.”
So, what would it take for these meetings to be productive?
“Find some middle ground because the government is in a bad spot. I don’t think anybody is really thinking about cancelling a $40 billion project that can actually affect all of B.C. and Canada”
