WestJet is suspending all international and transborder flights for one month starting at 11:59 p.m. MDT on Sunday, March 22.
CEO and President Ed Sims says the move comes after the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canadian borders will be closed to everyone except Canadian citizens and permanent residents – with some exceptions – and that all Canadians abroad need to return home as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the world.
“This means our final commercially scheduled flights from international and transborder destinations will launch on Sunday night by 11:59 p.m. local time,” Sims said. “After that, we will be operating rescue and repatriation flights in partnership with the Canadian government.”
As of Monday night, Sims says international and transborder tickets are no longer available for sale during this 30 day period.
As of 11:59 p.m. MDT on Wednesday, WestJet will no longer sell outbound international ticket for travel until Sunday so as to not send Canadians out of the country.
“To assist Canadians in returning home on short notice, we are in the process of lowering prices on our remaining seats into Canada in all cabins,” Sims said.
“In addition, we will also reduce our domestic schedule by approximately 50 per cent. At this point, all network changes are in place for the next 30 days. ”
WestJet currently has three flights a day between Kamloops and Calgary. It’s unclear how those flights might be affected at this time.
