The city of Kamloops is cancelling Canada Day festivities this year because of COVID-19.
In a statement, the city says the decision comes after consultation with the organizing partners – the Kamloops Multicultural Society and the Kamloops Arts Council – calling it a ‘difficult decision’.
“BC health officials have indicated that physical distancing measures put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 will remain in place throughout the summer,” said Mayor Ken Christian. “These decisions are never easy, but we know this is in the best interest of our residents.”
The event at Riverside Park draws more than 30,000 people each year, to ‘celebrate Canada’s diversity through art, entertainment, and food.’
“While this is disappointing, we cannot lose focus of the bigger picture and the health of our residents,” added Christian. “We look forward to celebrating together in 2021.”
