Thompson Rivers University is setting aside about 100 beds on campus for international students to quarantine this fall.
Vice president of administration and finance Matt Milovick says those beds would be for students who will be living off campus but need a place to quarantine in the mean time. And he says more will be set aside if needed.
“And we’re working through the logistics of providing meal plans and other services to them during that period. Because that will be tough, to be quarantined somewhere unfamiliar for two weeks. So I think we’re doing a pretty good job with that. We hope the students will come. We think the fall offering is going to be robust and a great experience, even though the campus experience will be somewhat limited.”
Milovick says the school anticipates beds on campus to be at 50 or 60 per cent of capacity, which would be between 600 and 700 students. He says the McGill housing has space for about 1,300 students.
He says some students might come over in August to quarantine before the fall semester, and some might take classes virtually while quarantining, if they arrive later.
“Absolutely, I see actually both of those situations playing out. With respect to quarantining on campus, we’re setting aside I believe one of our McGill properties for international students who perhaps may be living off campus but need a place to quarantine in the meantime.”
Last year, about 40 per cent of students at TRU were from out-of-country and 60 per cent of students were domestic.
