For the first time ever, Kamloops will be represented on basketball’s biggest stage.
Kelly Olynyk – a South Kamloops Secondary School graduate – and his Miami Heat are off to the finals after beating the Boston Celtics 125-113 in Game 6 last night to win the Eastern Conference title.
That will set up a match against the LeBron James-led LA Lakers who beat the Denver Nuggets in five games to win the Western Conference title.
Olynyk didn’t see the floor in Game 6 of the Conference Finals against his former team. He also did not play in Game 4 and saw about four minutes of action in Game 5 where he put up five points in a 121-108 loss to the Celtics.
In the 12 games he’s played in, the 29-year-old averaged six points and 4.1 rebounds in about 12 minutes of work each night. The 6-foot-11, 240-pound forward averaged 8.2 points in 62 regular-season games.
Game 1 of the NBA Finals begin on Wednesday.
