B.C’s Girl Guides say the snap election in the province is the perfect opportunity to empower young girls to explore and become involved in politics.
Diamond Isinger is the B.C. Commissioner for the Girl Guides and she tells NL News many girls are already interested in issues they may not see as political.
“Many girls are interested in issues like the environment, like inclusion, like COVID right now with the pandemic ongoing,” she said.
“Many of the issues that they are concerned with connect exactly to the news coverage unfolding right now – the topics that candidates and parties are talking about. It’s about finding age appropriate opportunities for parents, for families to engage with their daughters.”
She recommends making politics part of dinner conversation rather than a taboo.
“Take their already existing interest in different topics and turn it into an opportunity to really explore the importance in engaging in democracy, the importance of voting and what role they can play now as kids as well as in the future,” Isinger added.
She also encourages parents and caregivers to take their girls with them to vote, or have them research local candidates if you are intending on voting by mail.
