Trans Mountain will be restarting drilling under the Thompson River near the Kamloops Airport.
In an update on its website, it’s warning residents in Brocklehurst about noise from hammering, which will be starting again today.
“Due to technical challenges encountered during the installation of the pipe under the Thompson River, the HDD (horizontal directional drilling) process is being restarted. This will involve the removal of the pipe that has been installed and re-drilling of the existing path under the river,” the update says.
City councillor Bill Sarai says contractors will be making sure they aren’t making noise when most people are sleeping.
“The work will be going on for a little bit longer. They understood concerns of the neighborhood when they were working after hours. And they assured us with this update, which is really nice to get, the hours are 7 in the morning to 10 at night. They’ve put up more sound barrier walls.”
Concerns from residents were relayed nearly two weeks ago after workers were drilling near midnight.
Sarai says Trans Mountain assured the situation won’t happen again.
“And we expect work noise to be in the daytime just like any other industry. Or road paving, like Tranquille Road. We understand that, that’s the price we have to pay for improvements. Since that day, no. The more I’ve looked into it, the more they’ve shared with us it was a one-off,” he says.
“This is the type of partnership we knew we’d get from Trans Mountain and it’s coming through.”
Details of the technical challenges encountered under the river are not clear, and NL News has reached out to Trans Mountain for more information.
Sarai says it’s his understanding the extra work won’t cause any significant delays for the project.
