Shane Doan is returning to the Arizona Coyotes.
The longtime Coyotes captain has been hired as the team’s Chief Hockey Development Officer where he will serve as a strategic advisor to owner Alex Meruelo and General Manager Bill Armstrong, supporting the business and hockey operations departments.
“We are very excited to welcome Shane Doan back to the Coyotes organization,” Meruelo said, in a statement. “No one has done more for the Coyotes or for the game of hockey in Arizona than Shane. We look forward to working with him for many years to come.”
A co-owner of the Kamloops Blazers where he played his junior hockey, Doan retired in 2017 after 21 seasons in the NHL (13 as captain) with 972 points in 1,540 games.
Drafted seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995 before their move to Arizona, Doan is the franchise leader in games played, points scored, goals (402), assists (570), power-play goals (128), and game-winning goals (69).
A two-time NHL All-Star, his number 19 jersey was also retired by the Coyotes on Feb. 24, 2019.
“I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity,” said Doan, in a statement. “I am extremely proud to have played my entire career for the Coyotes and all I want is for this franchise to be successful on and off the ice. The Valley is an incredible hockey market with a loyal and passionate fan base and with Mr. Meruelo, we now have strong and stable ownership and a very bright future in Arizona.”
During his three years with the Blazers, the Halkirk, Alta. native won two Memorial Cups (1994 and 1995) while putting up 161 points in 174 games.
Since retiring, Doan spent three years working for the NHL’s hockey operations department. He was also part of the management group for Team Canada’s gold medal winning team at the 2019 Spengler Cup.
