The operators of the Highland Valley Copper mine are raising the possibility the mine may not close for another two decades.
Teck Resources is now hoping to extend the life of the Highland Valley Copper Mine until 2040.
The president of local 7619 of the United Steelworkers Kyle Wolfe calls it a good first step.
“I think it is a great opportunity for long term employment at Highland Valley Copper. Its good for the community and good for our employees.”
Wolfe says there are several issues going forward before any final decisions are made.
“The possibility of autonomous hauling all kinds of different things out there that you need to look at to ensure that you have a feasible mine site that is also profitable.”
Company spokesman Peter Martel says a final decision is going to be made within two years.
The mine was originally slated to close in 2028.
