Dylan Garand has been named the WHL goaltender of the week for the week ending Nov. 7, 2021.
In two games against Portland and Victoria, the 19-year-old made 49 saves, giving him a 0.50 goals against average and a .980 save percentage.
Garand made 27 saves in a 7-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks last Wednesday, Nov. 3, before following that up with a 22 save shutout in a 6-0 win against Victoria on Friday, Nov. 5.
It was Garand’s tenth career shutout and second of the 2021-22 WHL season as the Blazers lead the BC Division with an 11-1 record.
A New York Rangers prospect, Garand has a 9-1 record, a 1.91 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage so far during this season. His nine wins are the most among WHL goalies, while his two shutouts have him tied for the WHL lead.
In 101 career WHL regular season games – all with Kamloops – Garand has a 65-23-4-2 record to go along with a 2.36 goals-against average and .916 save percentage.
Garand and the Blazers are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 10, when the visit the Kelowna Rockets. The Rockets are the only team to have beaten the Blazers this season.
Mathew Ward named WHL Player of the Week
Kamloops native Mathew Ward, a forward on the Swift Current Broncos, was also named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 7, 2021.
Ward, who is eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft, put up seven points (3G, 4A) in three games as the Broncos collected five of a possible six points. He had an assist on Wednesday, Nov. 3, as Swift Current were beaten 4-3 by Saskatoon in a shootout.
Two nights later, Ward had a goal and an an assist as the Broncos beat the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-2 Friday before a four point night (2G, 2A) against Lethbridge on Saturday, Nov. 6, where Ward scored the game winner.
The 5-foot-8, 153-pound forward leads the Broncos with 17 points (7G, 10A) in 14 games this season.
Ward and the Broncos are in action this Friday, Nov. 12 when they host to the Calgary Hitmen.
