After eight years at the helm of Hockey Canada, chief executive officer, Tom Renney, has announced his retirement, effective July 1.
A former head coach of the Kamloops Blazers, Renney joined Hockey Canada as president and CEO in July 2014. He stepped down as president in 2017, giving way to Scott Smith, who will be adding the CEO title to his duties as president.
“This is a decision I have been preparing for over the past year and while it is never easy, I know the time is right and I am grateful for the past eight years,” Renney said, in a statement.
Renney, a Cranbrook native, was behind the Blazers bench for the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons, coaching the team to their first Memorial Cup title in 1992.
Prior to his current role, Renney was Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations from 1998 to 2000.
“It is a bittersweet yet exciting day for Hockey Canada as we reflect on Tom’s leadership and legacy, while welcoming Scott into his new role,” Hockey Canada Board Chair, Michael Brind’Amour said. “Your hard work and commitment to the game is evident in the direction you have led our organization.”
“We are positioned to continue to grow the game and make it accessible to participants across the country. I wish you, Glenda and your family all the best in your well-deserved retirement.”
