The Kamloops Blazers traded up to get the 13th overall pick in the 2022 WHL Bantam Draft, choosing six-foot forward Nathan Behm.
They gave up the 19th overall pick as well as the 66th pick (third round) and 129th pick (sixth round) to the Saskatoon Blades.
“I’m just really excited to go to a world class organization,” he told NL Sports. “[It will be] 100 per cent the WHL for me, and I’m excited to get going. I just want to do anything to help the team.”
Behm, a Calgary native, put up 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 points in 29 games with the Edge School U15 Prep Team in the 2021-22 season.
“We are thrilled to be able to select Nathan. We see him as one of the most skilled players in the draft, he is a dynamic offensive player,” Blazers Director of Player Personnel, Robbie Sandland said.
“He’s a dual threat with the puck. He loves the game and wants to be a player. We look forward to seeing him in a Blazer jersey.”
Aleeza Courtney, the granddaughter of the late Blazers president Don Moores, made the selection Thursday morning.
The Blazers do not have a second pick in this year’s draft because of the Ryan Hughes trade back in 2019. They had three third rounders going into the draft, the other two being the 57th overall and the 63rd overall picks.
Forwards Jack Bakker from Surrey and Andrew Thomson from Sherwood Park, Alta. were taken in the third round, with defenceman Isa Guram from Burnaby the team’s fourth round pick.
In the fifth round, the Blazers took forward Zach Pantelakis from North Vancouver while in the seventh round, they took defenceman Teigan Semchyshen from Warman, Sask.
Goaltender Logan Edmonston from Saskatoon was the Blazers first pick in the eighth round with forward Tommy Lafreniere from Hornby Island the other pick in that round.
The Blazers then took defenseman Nicholas Morin from Coquitlam in the ninth round, defenseman Tyson Moss from Port Moody in the tenth round, forward Hunter Yanick from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. in the eleventh round, and forward Evan Cook from Surrey in the twelfth round.
