The Kamloops Blazers were big winners Wednesday night as the WHL handed out its end of season awards.
Blazers co-captain Logan Stankoven was named the Player of the Year, while goaltender Dylan Garand took home Goaltender of the Year honours.
“Thank you to my teammates and coaches for helping me achieve this award,” Stankoven said. “My friends and family also played a huge part as well as Blazer Nation, they play key parts in where I am today.”
“It’s an honour, there are so many other talented player who could have won this award, I’m grateful to win it.”
The Kamloops native beat Everett’s Olen Zellweger, Regina’s Connor Bedard, and Red Deer’s Ben King to become the first Blazer to be named WHL Player of the Year since 1995-96 when Jarome Iginla took home the honour.
Garand bested Edmonton’s Sebastian Cossa, Winnipeg’s Daniel Hauser, and Portland’s Taylor Gauthier to become the first Blazer since Corey Hirsch in 1991-92 to be named WHL Goaltender of the Year.
“I definitely would not have won this award without my teammates, they deserve a ton of credit,” Garand said. “We have an unbelievable coaching staff that gives me a bit of freedom, allows me to play my game and has allowed me to develop into myself.”
“It’s a huge honour to win this award. You look at the nominees and the past winners, to even be mentioned in the conversation is unbelievable.”
Stankoven was also named the WHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player while teammate Connor Levis took home the Scholastic Player of the Year Award.
Both Stankoven and Garand were named to the BC Division First All-Star team, while graduating Blazers Luke Toporowski and Quinn Schmiemann were both named to the BC Division Second All-Star team.
The Blazers organization was also up for the Team Business Award, which went to the Everett Silvertips.
