The City is announcing the departure of Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Syd Lecky.
Lecky has been in Kamloops since 2018. This fall, Lecky will be making the move north as he has accepted a promotion to the rank of Chief Superintendent in the Northwest Territories. Lecky will be stationed out of Yellowknife, and will be the next commanding officer at that division.
Many in the community are sending their well wishes including Mayor Ken Christian. “I am excited for Superintendent Lecky on this challenging appointment but disappointed that Kamloops will lose him as detachment commander. As Officer in Charge of Kamloops, he has provided consistent and exemplary leadership through a series of disasters and emergencies unprecedented in our history. He has moved policing towards a more inclusive community police service model and laid the foundations for stronger responses to mental health, addiction, and other domestic and social challenges.”
Lecky says it has been a privilege serving the Kamloops community for the last four years. “During my time here, we have worked hard with the City of Kamloops to bring to the forefront the challenges and changes presented in policing and the legal system. We have formed partnerships to help address the issues that continue to present themselves, and although I am moving on, I am confident that the detachment’s senior management team will continue to keep up the momentum and work toward positive change going forward.”
“Although I am looking forward to this new opportunity to serve the communities of the Northwest Territories, I would be remiss not to acknowledge that it was my time in Kamloops that prepared me for such a role,” said Lecky. “It is with both excitement and a heavy heart, that I thank the people of Kamloops for our time together.”
The city says the job posting and interview process has not yet been established and mentions that Lecky will continue with the Kamloops RCMP detachment through the fall.
Filling the Superintendent position is a detailed and thorough process. Candidates who apply will go through a selection and interview process led by the Kamloops Mayor, Chief Administrative Officer, and the RCMP. The final recommendation of the selection committee will be reviewed and endorsed by the Commissioner of the RCMP in Ottawa.
