B.C. Premier David Eby has upended his cabinet, bringing in new faces from the backbench and replacing senior cabinet ministers, including finance minister Selina Robinson.
Katrine Conroy, the former forests minister, will take over the finance portfolio from Selina Robinson, who has been demoted to Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
Ravi Kahlon, who was co-chair of Eby’s leadership campaign, will take on the new Housing Ministry, while Niki Sharma becomes the new Attorney General.
Rachna Singh, a former Parliamentary secretary, is the new education minister, a position held by Jennifer Whiteside, who now becomes Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.
Eby’s cabinet also has a new Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, with Bowinn Ma tapped to lead that portfolio.
The new minister of agriculture is Pam Alexis, while Rob Fleming, George Heyman, Mitzi Dean and Harry Bains keep their jobs in Transportation, Environment, Children and Family Development, and Labour.
Mike Farnworth also remains in his role as Public Safety Minister and B.C.’s Solicitor General, while Adrian Dix will carry on as Minister of Health.
The new 28 member cabinet includes four ministers of state, who will be supported by 14 parliamentary secretaries.
“British Columbia is a wonderful place to live, but people are looking for action on the issues facing them and their families,” Eby said, in a statement.
“If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that we can’t solve these problems alone. We need to solve them together. My team of determined colleagues will use a wealth and variety of experiences to continue the good work we’ve started and go further to deliver results people can see and feel in their communities.”
